  • Back up light wiring, '95 Mustang

    I bought my bride a backup camera for her 1995 Mustang. Camera hookup is easy enough, since it's part of the license plate frame and near the actual backup lights for power tie-in. And I also bought a wireless (Bluetooth I guess) device that will transmit from camera to monitor at the dash without having to run wiring. That said, now I'm still faced with hooking into the backup light circuit somewhere near the dash for monitor power. In the old days, that would have been a switch at the shifter, but I'm reasonably sure that on newer cars (1995 is "newer" to us), that circuit is at the tranny, not the shifter. It's an AOD-E tranny.
    I know I could hook into any ignition power-on circuit in the dash, but would prefer not to have the monitor on all the time. Anyone know where the nearest to dash reverse wiring would be and how to identify it?

    Does the wiring for the back up lights go through the neutral safety switch? I'm wondering if that wiring is close to the shifter, or if its on the side of the transmission? It shouldn't be that far away to run wires even if it was on the trans I'd think.

      I've been doing a little online research. I gather the backup light and neutral safety functions are in the same switch, on the tranny. Supposedly 8(!) wires coming out of it, so if I go that way, I gotta figure out which one I'd need.
      Also giving some thought to just tying into an ignition activated wire in dash. Originally I didn't want the monitor on all the time, but realized that OEM monitors are on all the time, so what the heck. The camera would only come on with reverse, but I wonder what the monitor will show with camera off. Wouldn't be an issue except at night (brightness).
      Anyone else have experience with this?

        Bluedot I would have to do some diggin in my manuals I have at work but with a test light you could find the wire you need to tap into by simply putting the car in reverse with the ignition on and probe the wires to see which one will power the test light only when it's in reverse but you need to also make sure with a voltmeter what voltage is on that wire because it could just be a 5volt reference wire to the computer 95 was a year of electrical madness because it was the year of change some were obd II and some were not I can look in the book on tues if you haven't gotten it figured out yet

          Wrench, what I found out years ago was that 95 Mustangs were the last of the ODB Is. (Also the last of the pushrod 302s.)
          I'm gonna bench test the monitor with batt power and no signal to see what the screen does. If it's just blank/dark, I'll hook it to an ignition activated wire. But if shows like a blue screen or such, I'll have to make sure it only comes on is reverse. My concern is unwanted cockpit light at night.

            Many of the cigarette lighters in these vehicles nowadays are disconnected when the key is shut off. Those can be checked easily enough with a phone charger to save probing around hunting for a hot ignition wire.

            Also, at the risk of it being too much effort to run, how hard would it be to run a hot wire from the back up light wiring in the trunk's main loom to the dash? I also wonder if the wiring from the neutral safety switch comes up through the floor pan close enough to where you're working?

            Then again, worst case scenario, you could run a lighted rocker switch into a blank plug on the dash to kill power where you don't want it.

              I too thought of the cig lighter. Crossed my fingers and checked it with a test light. Unfortunately, it's hot all the time. Rats....
              I did bench test the monitor with power and no signal - screen was totally blank/dark. OK then, an ignition activated wire will do for the monitor power, and as said earlier, camera hookup at the back end is easy.
              With a little hot rod ingenuity, this would be simple. But ya gotta understand that this is my wife's baby - owned since new, very pristine condition. So I have to be very selective about whatever I do here. Hell, I spent prolly 8-10 hours in trial and error engineering just designing a bracket for the monitor so I could make use of 2 existing screws in the dash above the console.
              Another wiring idea: I may be able to tap into the fusebox under the dash. Investigating that further.

                Might look on Ebay under "Fuse Tap Adapter". They've got some pretty nice little items there that are designed just for what you're wanting to do, as well as allow you to add your own fuse to the system.
