  • Why do people lie about cars???

I guess this is main reason why I hate the ricer fad, but it spills into our hot rodding world as well.

Why the hell do people have to embelish in how their car performs???

Whether it is racing, mileage, shows, performance, etc. I can understand some ribbing about racing, but there are buttload of guys out there that just say the mot ridiculous things.

    "yeah.....my car runs 10's"

...and it is some clapped out shitbox that only barley clears the 15 second hurdle at the track. I mean what gives? Why so full of crap that you have to shave 5 seconds off your ET to make yourself supposedley look better?

Seems like people like that should just be honest and not turn people off like that. You would get a lot more help and friends and end up going much quicker in your ride in the long run.

Guess it is just a question of being honest. And a lot of people out there are just plain full of it.

Guess I will go put some nitrous on the Floater and run some low 8's when the track opens up.......

They lie because they are just knuckleheads that don't have anything better to do.. it takes quite a bit to get a car to run in the 10's... Heck, a buddy of mine is going to be running his Nova again this year after sitting out all of last year and is going to be running some low 8's and high 7's...that nova is going to stand on its rear bumper.. I can hardly wait to see him get out of the car after his first 7 sec pass.. he'll be walking 3 ft off the ground
YES, it's fast and NO, you can't drive it!

            Yep

Then there's always the guy who's brother in law's uncles cousins nephew had this car that he would lay a hundred dollar bill on the dash and tell you that you could have it if you could reach it when he took off, but the car was sooo fast that you couldn't reach it during acceleration.
Seems to me like the money would have just fallen off the dash if the car was sooo fast.
I'm sure most of us have heard some version of this story. The first time I heard it was a 1955 Chevy with a "power pack 265", so I'm sure it was also a 10 second car.

What amazes me is that you actually seem to care about this. Let he who has never embellished anything cast the first stone.

Its not embellishment of a story that has some unknown origins. Like the 100 dollar bill story. Its the guy who everytime talks about his car it gets a tenth of a second faster or makes 5 more HP than last time. Those are the guys who tick me off, not the new version of the 5 decade old story. I am sure we all embellished our cars too. My car ran 11's, at over 120MPH well it did 11.99 @ 120.01MPH That could be 11.0 @129.9 And anywhere in there is embellishment.
The liar is the guy whose car ran 11.99@120.01 who then adds that he couldn't get into high gear but knows his car can run 10.50@130MPH and the next time you see time it ran 10.30@135 And you know that the car is a 12 second automatic with a peg leg. Then 2 weeks later you hear from his friend that at a track 200 miles away it ran 10.0 @145MPH. But on the way home he broke and had to get towed and has to put the old motor back in it ya know the 12 second one. Its those guys...

and some times it's just plain ignorance.

"My car will run 13's cause I out ran Joe and he runs 14's"

Heard that a lot when I was in high school and these guy's didn't even know where the track was.
A few guy's wouldn't race me just because I ran around with a couple of brothers who's father ran a 67 Nova in M/P back in the early 70's so they all assumed he did the motor in my 56 sedan delivery. Fact was it was just a 283 that came out of a 32 Ford roadster that the guy was replacing with a 350.
It did run pretty good though,14.60's with open headers a 3.55 gear and hard old bias ply G60's.

If every old POS pickup truck running around when I was a kid really had a "Corvette Motor" in it, there wouldn't be any Corvettes with engines in them...

Crab how many small blocks have fuelie camel hump heads with 202 valves with a 3/4 cam. Now I did have one guy tell me he had a 7/8 cam. I do know they make a 4/7 swap cam but that's another animal.

LOL...I wonder if that is a local thing or if there are Vette powered pick ups everywhere? Seems to me they were all 400 cubic inches too...

I never embellished I underembellished (is that a word?). When I blew up the 302 in my 69 Camaro I told everyone I had to put a 283 in it because I was broke. It was a 11:1 350 out of a dirt track car. Not real fast, but a lot faster than a 283. Won quite a bit before word got out what it was. Well a lot to me. This was back in 72.

I just heard a great one the other day. Some guy took a friend for a ride in his 72 Nova with a fresh 350 that he drives on the street. he took him through the gears but only took it up to 5,000 RPM. Said he could have taken it up to 10,000 RPM ! I have seen the car, it is nice but COME ON, who the hell does this guy think he is kidding ?
